SLAC’s National Accelerator Laboratory Diversity Internship Program

At SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory we don’t just accept difference – we embrace it, we support it, and we thrive on it for the benefit of our employees, our science and our community. Diversity at SLAC focuses on a broader set of qualities than race and gender. In the context of the workplace, valuing diversity means creating a workplace that respects and includes differences, recognizing the unique contributions that individuals with many types of differences can make, and creating a work environment that maximizes the potential of all employees.

With this in mind, SLAC offers (5) Diversity Internship Programs designed to provide exposure to one of the world’s leading research laboratories for students who are historically under-represented in this field.

The SLAC laboratory designs, constructs, and operates state-of–the-art electron accelerators and related experimental facilities, and conducts research in astrophysics, photon science, accelerator and particle physics.

SLAC invites college graduates who meet the qualificiations to apply for this one year paid professional internship. You will be matched with a mentor to guide you through your internship experience. Current internship assignments include:

I.	Controls Department: Internship position to join the team developing a modern replacement for the legacy accelerator control system. The successful candidate will identify the control and data acquisition requirements of a typical accelerator node, investigates the available and/or emerging technologies, and develops the necessary electronics and software in support of the above described systems.

II.	Facilities Department: This intern will be responsible for providing electrical design, engineering, cost estimates, design reviews, construction/project management, preparation of construction specifications, engineering calculations, coordination with design engineering firms, punch lists, supporting senior engineers for the closeout and customer hand-over for projects at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory.

III.	SSRL Department: Seeking an intern to work on image processing, mainly with data from the transmission x-ray microscope on SSRL beam line 6-2. The intern will work with commercial software and in-house MATLAB routines for image processing such as tomographic reconstruction and visualization, and construction of X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectra from imaging. The intern will also have an opportunity to work with data collection at the beam line (training will be provided).

IV.	LCLS Department: Intern will assist LCLS area physicists in the Accelerator Directorate. Monitor and evaluate electron and x-ray beam conditions and factors affecting those conditions. Participate in the daily operation of the accelerator, which includes shift work (day, swing, occasional weekends). Interact with the operations staff of accelerator, photon and experimental beam lines. Possess or develop skills necessary to independently assist accelerator operations. Develop new procedures and techniques as needed.
