The 2011 Walk on Water competition was held on Saturday, October 22, 2011 at the Southwestern Community College swimming pool, from 10:00 – 1:00 PM. Registration began at 9:00 am. Free parking was available in Lots K and L.

The competition had 88 attendees, with 13 teams from Southwestern College, San Diego State University, San Diego Mesa College, and various high schools within the San Diego MESA Schools Program (San Pasqual High School, Mark Twain High School, Crawford High School), and La Jolla High School.

Some of the campuses respective MESA programs’ refunded costs to build the buoyancy shoes that teams created to ‘walk on water’, up to $100. Southwestern College student organizations such as AMSA (American Medical Student Association) and SHPE (Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers) provided refreshments for attendees as part of their fundraising efforts.

The San Diego MESA Alliance would like to thank the high school team advisers/chaperones for their support, as well as the following industry and faculty volunteers:

About 200 middle school students competed at the Central Union High School swimming pool during the Mathematics Engineering Science Achievement program’s “Walking on Water” competition.

Twenty-seven schools throughout the Imperial Valley entered the competition that required, in addition to two months of preparation, a keen focus on how math and science mesh in engineering, said Jeanette Espino, MESA program director.

While the would-be inventors got to bask in the sun and splash in the water, Espino said the competition also serves as a useful instructional tool. More than 200 high school students will get to do the same at 5:15 p.m. today during their MESA competition at CUHS’ swimming pool.

Powered by sheer physical energy and a little bit of engineering Kevin Humaran, of Holtville Middle School, labored hard Wednesday to make it across 80 feet of water using shoes or sandals attached to what looked like makeshift water skis made of foam and covered in duct tape.

Kevin, a 14-year-old eighth-grader, didn’t quite make it but said he learned how the mechanics of motion go a long way into attempting to do something as deceptively simple as trying to “walk” across the surface of the water without falling.

“I just lost my balance,” said Kevin. “It was pretty difficult.”

Many Thanks for an excellent performance and representation from 57+ students and volunteers on the Walk on Water event this past Saturday 10-18-2008. MESA students assisted the MESA staff throughout the event. They put up direction signs, made food sales, took pictures and ran errands. They set up tables, chairs and canopies, and later took all down, and kept the facility spotlessly clean during and after the event!!!!!!

I congratulate all the clubs for their collaboration to work together producing a good food sale; it was clean, organized and welcoming. I am proud of you.

Congratulations to the Society for Professional, Hispanic Engineers (SHPE) team from Southwestern College for winning first prize for fastest shoes. Congratulations to the Culinary Grilling Club (CGC) Team from Southwestern College who won first Prize in Originality AND first prize for Best Use of Recyclable Materials.

Congratulations to Antonio from Morse High School, Gregorio Magana from SDSU-MEP, and Phillip from SDCC for placing 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, respectively, in the informal swim competition.

Many thanks form SWC MESA to all members of the Alliance for participating in this event. Thank you to SDSU-MEP and City College MESA students and leaders. Thank you to the MSP students and leaders for your representation of MESA high schools and middle schools. It is your spirit and support that is invaluable.

Last but not least, many thanks to the MSE faculty and staff for their support by judging and/or attending the WOW event.

Raga Bakhiet
