Poster Presentations
All interns in the NSF MESA Summer Team Internship Program are REQUIRED to complete a team poster presentation and to present their poster as a team at an annual reception in ~August. Industry representatives, academic guests, and all interns will be invited to this reception.
Poster presentations will be an opportunity to create a cohesive visual of your internship experiences. As a team, the poster must look professional and cohesive. Students will need to be creative in thinking about themes to accomplish this goal.
Poster creation:
All interns will be grouped into a ‘team’ by the Program Coordinator. Each team will collaborate to create a single 3 ft high by 4 ft long research poster.
Interns may use any program as long as it can be exported into a file viewable by staff and supervisors. Typically, students use Microsoft Power Point 2002 or greater version.
Interns will need to be creative in creating a poster that ties all interns in the team experiences together under the headings:
- Introduction
- Methods
- Results
- Conclusion
- Acknowledgements
Information to add at the top of the poster:
- Name
- Email Address
- Campus
- Major
- Grant #
Only add the grant number(s) for your campus:
- San Diego City College: NSF Grant # DUE0653291
- SDSU: NSF Grant # DUE0653277
- Southwestern College: NSF Grant # DUE0653234
SPSD Icon: Students have permission to use the SPSD Logo. It will be sent via e-mail.
Company Logo: Students MUST get permission from his/her mentor to use their company’s logo.
Poster templates:
*In Microsoft PowerPoint, zoom up to 400% to have a general idea of how your presentation will look like on a blown up printed poster for the reception.
Poster submission instructions:
- Students will submit 1 electronic poster per team to the Program Coordinator, Eric Pamintuan (epamintuan@projects.sdsu.edu) AND to their assigned MESA Director (either Rafael Alvarez, Raga Bakhiet, or Theresa Garcia) for feedback and review. Posters that are not presentable/professional will not be printed in color.
- The electronic poster will be critiqued from the aforementioned Program Coordinator and MESA Directors.
- Students must edit their team poster according to the feedback given from the above staff.
- Students then submit the edited copy of the team poster to EACH industry or faculty mentor(s) for review and approval.
- After EACH industry or faculty mentor approves poster, 1 final poster per team may be submitted to the Program Coordinator, Eric Pamintuan (epamintuan@projects.sdsu.edu)
Poster presentation:
During the actual presentation of posters to occur at a reception in ~August, interns will give a general overview of the company and internship. Interns can then talk specifically about their experience, what they learned, and how they hope to apply this to their learning and another job.
If the team of interns actually interned at different companies or different projects they should try to come up with talking points to show cohesion. This can mean talking about the team component, collaboration, being a support system to each other, and similar and different ways they handled challenges and successes.
