Undergraduate and graduate students in engineering and physics are being sought to help excite the minds of K-12 students at the Science of Sports event, scheduled for March 22 at the Hall of Champions in Balboa Park, during the San Diego Science Festival. Volunteers will be paired with interactive sport displays being specially brought in for the event. Volunteers will team with the exhibitor representative to informally explain to visitors how and why the sport works.

Examples of display and subject matter for a volunteer:
Display: Wave machine and surfing
Volunteer to describe: What wave formations work best in surfing and why?
What does the shape and surface of the board control?

Display: Golf simulator
Volunteer to describe: What does the shape of the golf club have to do with the performance of the player?

Display: Skate ramp
Volunteer to describe: How does the angle of the ramp, shape and roll of the board affect performance?

We’re requesting two hours of a volunteer’s time. The event runs from 10-4:30pm and volunteers are able to sign up for more time if they wish. In addition to engaging the kids and their families, this will be a good opportunity to meet the inventors, owners and business managers connected with the local active sport community.
