Serina Diniega currently works as a postdoctoral researcher at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. She works on planetary geomorphology (i.e., the study of the surface features found on different planets, especially the Earth and Mars) by developing and analyzing simple models of the formation and evolution of common landforms (such as lava fields or sand dunes). She enjoys this work as it is very interdisciplinary and requires collaboration with a wide range of scientists (and often fun travel to interesting landscapes). Serina grew up in Hawaii and attended public schools through high school. She graduated from the California Institute of Technology in 2003 with a BS in Mathematics, and from the University of Arizona in 2010 with a PhD in Applied Mathematics (minor: Planetary Science). Her primary advice to current students is to explore your options and be creative in thinking about future plans, as it’s important to have a goal and work hard towards it, but it’s also important to not be afraid of the changes and challenges that life may throw at you!

Students will meet with her after the panel during an informal mentoring/networking break out session.

Students will learn about her research, gain information about career or research opportunities at NASA and gain advice about graduate school.
