Attention Sophomores, Juniors and 5th-year Seniors:

Program Description

The UCSD Amgen Scholars Program is a ten-week, full-time research experience for undergraduates, supported by the Amgen Foundation. The objectives of the program are: to provide students with the skills to become research scholars; to stimulate students’ serious consideration of graduate study; and to increase learning and networking opportunities for students committed to pursuing a career in science or engineering.

The program will take place from Monday, June 24 to Friday, August 30, 2013.

Eligibility

Applicants must be:

– U.S. citizens or U.S. permanent residents;
– Undergraduates enrolled in accredited four-year colleges and universities in the U.S., Puerto Rico and other U.S. territories; – sophomores (with four quarters or three semesters of college experience), juniors and non‑graduating seniors (who are returning in the fall to continue their undergraduate experience);

Preferred Majors: Biology, Molecular Biology, Molecular and Cellular Biology, Biological Sciences, Microbiology, Biochemistry, Biochemistry and Cell Biology, Chemistry, Bioengineering, and Neurosciences.

 AND must also have:

– A cumulative G.P.A. of 3.2 or above; and
– A strong interest in pursuing a Ph.D. or M.D./Ph.D.; but neither M.D, nor pre-med.

Program Requirements

Research projects are designed and supervised by faculty mentors in accordance with students’ research interests. The program activities are substantial, requiring a full-time commitment from each student (students cannot work, take classes, participate in any other summer research program, or go on vacation while in the program). Attendance at meetings and seminars is mandatory.  Each student will be trained to write a research proposal and paper, and present his or her paper at the UCSD Summer Research Conference.

Awards

A $3,600 stipend for ten-week program;
– On-campus housing and a board allowance;
– A $500 travel allowance is offered only to non-UCSD students for travel to/from San Diego;

Application Procedures

A complete Summer Research Program fully online application includes all of the following:

  • on-line application narrative, that includes contact information, description of previous relevant to program completed activities and a personal essay (no more than 500 words);
  • a current unofficial transcript that can be uploaded online (hard copy submitted separately only upon request from our office)
  • one letter of recommendation from a faculty member who will submit it electronically on our application website.
