UC Irvine Graduate School Visitation Days

The Henry Samueli School of Engineering at the University of California, Irvine invites you to participate in our two-day recruitment event, including a conference titled “Disruptive Demographics in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM)” and the first annual Prospective Graduate Student Visitation Day. Please see below for more details about these two events.

The “Disruptive Demographics in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM)” will feature Dr. Calvin Mackie.  Dr. Mackie is an internationally recognized Speaker, Author, Professor and Inventor.  Calvin Mackie is a former professor of mechanical engineering at Tulane University in New Orleans. President Bush honored him with the 2003 Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics, and Engineering Mentoring. Louisiana Governor Kathleen Blanco appointed Mackie to the Louisiana Recovery Authority, leading the state’s rebuilding efforts following hurricanes Katrina and Rita. He is the author of “A View from the Roof: Lessons for Life and Business”. He was featured in Spike Lee’s HBO documentary “When the Levees Broke: A Requiem in Four Parts” and has appeared on national shows as the PBS News Hour with Jim Lehrer and the Tom Joyner Show. Dr. Mackie will speak about the importance of diversity and graduate education and he will address how to overcome the many obstacles students can face, particularly for students from traditionally underrepresented and underserved communities.

UC Irvine’s Samueli School of Engineering is one of the nation’s fastest growing engineering schools, attracting talented faculty and students from across the country and around the world. The Samueli School of Engineering is comprised of five academic departments, including biomedical engineering, chemical engineering and materials science, civil and environmental engineering, electrical engineering and computer science and mechanical and aerospace engineering. This year we welcomed students to our newest program in M.S. Engineering Management.
