Career Fairs/Workshops

If you are unsure where to begin with a job search, consider attending the Job Search Strategies workshop on April 9 at 11:00 AM.  In today’s market, you need more than just a resume and attendance at the career fair to land a position.  This workshop will suggest other options for your job search so you can put together a comprehensive strategy.

Once you have your strategy, you need to prepare a resume and learn how to ace your interview.  On April 11 at 1:00 PM we are offering an Effective Interviews workshop, and on April 15 at 11:00 AM, a Resumes that Work workshop.  If you already have a resume and would like to have it reviewed, you can schedule a meeting with a counselor, or come to Career Services during walk-in hours and a counselor will review and make suggestions about your resume.  Walk-in hours are Monday through Thursday, 1:00 – 2:45 PM, and Friday, 10:00 – 11:45 AM.  A walk-in session is limited to 15 minutes.  If you think you need more time with a counselor, you can schedule a longer session by calling (619) 594-6851.

If you plan to attend the Just In Time Career Fair, you will want to attend the Career Fair Success workshop on April 18 at 2:00 PM which provides tips on how to make the most of working the career fair.  With all the employers and students attending career fairs, it can be intimidating knowing how and where to start.  This workshop will help you overcome your concerns and provide helpful tips.  You also may want to have your resume reviewed one final time before the fair, so plan to bring your resume to Career Services during Resumania on April 23 and April 24 from 1:00 – 3:00 PM.  Employers and counselors will be available during these times to help you make final edits to your resume.

All workshops listed above will be held in the Career Services office at Student Services East, Suite 1200.  Reservations for these events can be made at Aztec Career Connection career.sdsu.edu .

Other Tools

While your resume and networking may get you an interview for a position, you will need to ace your interview to actually get the job.  A great way to practice your interviewing skills, and to find a list of potential interview question, is to visit the BIG Interview option in Aztec Career Connection.  There are sample interviews for many different kinds of positions, and BIG interview allows you to practice answering the sample questions.

Employers visiting SDSU

While most companies have already visited campus to conduct interviews, keep checking Aztec Career Connection for employers who might visit campus to fill newly approved positions.  Also, there are still many positions posted on Aztec Career Connection for employers who are not visiting campus but are interested in having SDSU students apply to their open positions.

Continuing SDSU Students

Students may want to take time to meet with their faculty advisors and/or Career Services counselors to plan for grad school, internship or part time employment opportunities.

Graduating Students

Career Services will offer Career University 2013 in June which is a free workshop series open to recent SDSU graduates.  Workshop topics will help with your career search and your assimilation into the workforce.  The sessions are offered Tuesdays & Thursdays in June at the Career Services office from 11:00 AM until noon.  A tentative schedule of workshops will be included in the April newsletter.

Past and Upcoming Events

Since the last newsletter, Career Services has sponsored several successful STEM related workshops including the Technical Resume Workshop, STEM Employer Panel (jointly sponsored with the Biomedical Technology Student Association) and the Security Clearance Symposium.  All were well attended with very positive feedback from the students attending.  We are now selecting topics for STEM events during the 2013-14 school year and would appreciate your suggestions for event topics.  To suggest a topic, email Paul Salce, STEM Employment Analyst, at psalce@mail.sdsu.edu .  Also, email Paul if you would like to provide feedback about past events.
