National Scholarships
Boren – Apply as sophomores or juniors
• Must study abroad for at least one semester in Africa, Asia, Central & Eastern Europe, Eurasia, or Latin America with the intent to learn the language and culture of the region
• Funding is $20,000 for full year; $10,000 for one semester; $8,000 for summer (summer funding available only for students in science, technology, engineering or mathematics)
• Preference given to applicants who demonstrate a commitment to work in the federal government
• Deadline: SDSU deadline is January 15, 2012; Foundation deadline is February 9, 2012
Gilman – Apply as sophomores, juniors, or seniors
• Must study abroad for a minimum of four weeks in one country; must be an undergraduate student in good academic standing; must be a Federal Pell Grant recipient at the time of application or during the term of study abroad
• Preference given to students from diverse backgrounds who will be studying in non-traditional destinations
• Funding is up to $5,000
• Deadline: October 7 for spring travel; March 1 for fall travel

Goldwater – Apply as sophomores or juniors
• Provides up to $7,500 annually for students pursuing careers in mathematics, the natural sciences, or engineering
• Must have participated in research or can demonstrate intellectual curiosity through independent investigation of a theory or issue in their field
• Must be interested in graduate school and research opportunities
• Deadline: SDSU deadline is December 16; Foundation deadline is January 31, 2012

Marshall – Apply as senior or after earn Bachelor’s degree
• Minimum GPA of 3.8
• Stipend used to support graduate work at a university in the United Kingdom
• Funds used to cover university fees, cost of living, annual book grant, thesis grant, research and daily travel grants, fares to and from the United States
• Deadline: SDSU deadline is September 1; Foundation deadline is October 3

Truman – Apply as juniors
• Provides $30,000 to pursue graduate degree in public service fields
• Must have extensive records of public and community service, leadership potential and commitment to a career in government or public service
• Deadline: SDSU deadline is December 16; Foundation deadline is late January/early February

Udall – Apply as sophomores or juniors

• Provides up to $5,000 for one year of undergraduate study
• Must be committed to a career related to the environment, or committed to a career in tribal public policy or Native American health care
(Only Native American or Alaskan Natives are eligible for tribal policy and health career scholarships)
• Community service and leadership are very important
• Deadline: SDSU deadline is February 4, 2012; Foundation deadline is March 1, 2012

Jack Kent Cooke – Apply as seniors or as recent graduates
• Provides up to $50,000 annually to support a graduate degree program for up to six years; supports most fields of study
• Must show exceptional promise, have demonstrated excellence in academic endeavors and extracurricular activities and have financial need

Hertz Foundation Graduate Fellowships – Apply as seniors or current graduate students
• Provides institutional payment and a stipend to pursue Ph.D. in the applied physical sciences, engineering and those aspects of modern biology that apply the physical sciences intensively
• Awards based on merit

National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship – Apply as seniors or 1st year of graduate study
• Fellows receive a $30,000 stipend and cost of education allowance of $10,500 for 12-month tenures for a maximum of three years – can be used over five years
• Awarded for graduate study leading to research-based master’ or doctoral degrees in the mathematical, physical, biological, behavior and social sciences, and engineering
