Position Summary:
To assist in assigned departmental activities related to the operations of the particular department. The work assigned to the Intern III supplements the formal educational program of advanced college studies. Duties may vary widely depending on the departmental needs.

Note: Intern IIIs are unclassified hourly, at-will employees paid on an hourly or per diem basis. Hourly employees are not eligible for benefits nor subject to Civil Service Rules. However, they are subject to all other City policies and procedures.

Current vacancies are within the Public Works Department/Conservation Section. Intern III will assist residential and business community members in assessing energy-saving opportunities and enrolling in energy efficient rebate programs; implement new community-based programs targeted on energy conservation, watershed protection, water conservation, Urban Heat Island Effect and climate change mitigation.

Internship positions are for one (1) year and have flexible hours based on school/work schedules. Applicants with background in public education, outreach/marketing or environmental science are encouraged to apply. Strong writing and verbal skills are required, however necessary technical training will be provided by the department.

Applications will be reviewed on a regular basis and interviews will be scheduled as the need arises to fill the vacancies.

Essential Functions:
Duties may include, but are not limited to the following: perform para-professional level work specific to the department’s needs; use initiative and application of skills and education; work semi-independently and be resourceful and systematic in approach to various assignments and tasks; may be responsible for a significant level of a department project or be part of the project team.

Minimum Qualifications:
Any combination of education and/or experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:

(1) Current enrollment in a degree program with at least 60 units completed; or
(2) Graduation with a degree within six months prior to beginning employment.

Degree program must relate to the department’s mission such as public administration, political science, communications, international relations, business management or a related field. Previous work experience is not required. Bilingual skills (English/Spanish) are highly desirable but not required.
