The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) sponsors a 10-week summer internship program for rising juniors and seniors majoring in homeland security related science, technology, engineering and mathematics (HS-STEM) disciplines. The DHS HS-STEM Summer Internship Program provides students with the opportunity to conduct research in DHS mission-relevant research areas at federal research facilities located across the country.

There are a limited number of competitive, paid internship opportunities available with the US Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) through the Student Career Experience Program (SCEP). If you know of a student that would be interested in a summer internship or you believe would make a valuable addition to the FWS, please encourage them to contact their regional FWS office (www.fws.gov/where) and apply directly to their respective regions for open positions. As I receive more information about this and other opportunities I will pass it along. In the mean time, please post and spread the word to any promising student who is focusing on a natural resources-related degree.

The US Forest Service Eastern Region is currently in the process of hiring college freshmen and sophomores in various disciplines for our Student Career Experience Program (SCEP) and our Student Temporary Employment Program (STEP). Minority students are strongly encouraged to apply.

The internships are developmental opportunities for students or recent graduates who are interested in acquiring experience in the natural and cultural resources and developing their awareness of Green and Environmental Sustainability strategies, while working with professional Forest Service employees, partners and the public to strengthen volunteerism and service on the National Forests and Grasslands.

The MURF program aims to increase the participation of underrepresented students (such as African American, Hispanic, and Native American, females who are underrepresented in their discipline, or first-generation college
students) in science and engineering Ph.D. or M.D./Ph.D. programs and to make Caltech’s programs more visible to students not traditionally exposed to Caltech.

Caltech’s Amgen Scholars Program is geared towards students in biology, chemistry, and biotechnology fields. Some of these fields include biology, biochemistry, bioengineering, chemical and biomolecular engineering, and chemistry.

A four-week summer residential program (June 24, 2012 – July 21, 2012) hosted within the medical school at UCSD for community college students who are
interested in health professions as well as biomedical science research. $2,340 stipend per student is provided to cover cost of room/board and taxes.
Program activities include individualized mentoring, health career counseling, admission test preparation courses, study and time management skills workshop, health-related internship opportunities and informal meetings and social events with medical students.

The American Physical Society and IBM co-sponsor a research internship program for undergraduate women. The goal is to encourage women students to pursue graduate studies in science and engineering.

The purpose of this “Webinar,” which will be conducted from Washington D.C. at no cost, is to provide students, faculty, and staff with great information on employment opportunities, internship programs, the application process, and the qualifications needed to apply. This is a wonderful opportunity for students, faculty, and staff to become informed on what educational opportunities the United States Department of Agriculture has to offer.
