Press release at SDSU NewsCenter: https://newscenter.sdsu.edu/sdsu_newscenter/news.aspx?s=73639

Fifty-two regional high school, commununity college and university students with an interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) came together to demonstrate and discuss leadership.

Guest speakers, including several from San Diego State’s College of Engineering, spoke to the student participants from the MESA, MESA Engineering Program (MEP) and Maximizing Science Potential (MSP) programs.

SDSU students involvement

SDSU Engineering Research Center student representatives Ismael Reveles and Frank Bogart presented on the Center for Sensorimotor Neural Engineering and its multidisciplinary research on building a mind-controlled prosthetic hand.

With the presentation as a backdrop, students competed in teams, using their imagination, engineering and teamwork skills to build a Prosthetic Hand.

Other speakers included San Diego City College MESA director, Rafael Alvarez; and SDSU MEP and SDCC MESA alumna and current industry member from Hamilton Sundstrand Power Systems, Maria Charles.

Eleventh annual event

The 11th annual San Diego MESA Alliance Leadership Summit, held in March, is a collaboration of high school, community college and university MESA programs.

Participating students came from San Diego City College, San Diego State University, Southwestern College, Ventura College, Morse High, Lincoln High, Southwest High and Calexico High Schools.

First generation students

MESA programs provide academic support and professional development to underrepresented, low income, first generation students pursuing an interest, degree or career in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics fields.

It is through the San Diego MESA Alliance that students from different academic levels network and work together with other MESA students and industry members.

This event was made possible with the support of Atkins Global Inc. (Formerly PBS&J) that donated $5,000 to the San Diego MESA Alliance to benefit the 2012 Leadership Summit.

The organization also received support from the San Diego State University Engineering Research Center and MESA Programs from Southwestern College, San Diego City College and San Diego State University.
