Research Experience for Undergraduates at the Synchrotron Radiation Center (SRC)
The SRC light source is funded by the National Science Foundation and uses an electron storage ring to provide synchrotron light as a tool for doing scientific research. We are located southeast of Madison, Wisconsin.
Our Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program runs for 9.5 weeks from May 26 to August 1, 2009. Participants will work with a mentor, graduate students and SRC scientists in the completion of a research project. The experience culminates with the writing of a scientific paper and presentation at a research symposium. Participants receive a generous stipend in addition to paid travel to and from Madison, housing, health insurance (if needed), transportation to SRC, and a partial meal allowance. Participants are housed and interact with other summer program students of various disciplines creating a community of research scholars.
Participants and projects from last year included:
Michaela Allen, from Xavier University of Louisiana, worked with Dr. Joe Bisognano and Mr. Robert Legg on a project titled “The Effects of Field Curvature on Bunch Formation in RF Electron Guns.”
Rebecca Armenta, from University of El Paso, Texas, worked with Dr. Franz Himpsel and Graduate student Peter Cook on a project titled “Spectroscopy of Dyes for Solar Cells.”
Jasmine Frederick, from Xavier University of Louisiana, worked with Drs. Carol Hirshmugl and Robert Julian on a project titled “Synchrotron FTIR Imaging of BCP and CPPD Crystals in Arthritis Model System.”
Hanna Heo, from University of Wisconsin-Madison, worked with Drs. Carol Hirshmugl and Michael Nasse on a project titled “Infrared (IR) Microspectroscopy of Algae.”
Emily Kopp, from University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, worked with Dr. Hartmut Höchst and Graduate Student Richard Hatch on a project titled “Characterizing the Electronic Properties of Organic Semiconductors.”
Andrew Makepeace, from Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, worked with Dr. Leon Shohet on a project titled “The Effects of Vacuum Ultraviolet Radiation on Silicon Wafers.”
Satyakumar Nagarajan, from Iowa State University, worked with Dr. James Lawler and Graduate Student Mark Stockett on a project titled “Carrier Molecules of the Diffuse Interstellar Bands.”
Jason Smith, from East Stroudsbrug University, worked with Dr. Mike Abrecht on a project titled “Spectroscopy Studies of Fe-As Superconductors.”
