STUDENTS DAZZLE ENGINEERS

NATIONAL CITY β€” The students at Granger Junior High School had so impressed a group of professional engineers over the years that they wanted to include the students in a project.

β€œIt was a very good experience for the students,” said Mary Rose Peralta, principal of the school.

The project was the Flex Your Power Loteria (Bingo) event, organized by members of the San Diego professional chapter of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers. The organization received a grant from SDG&E to educate the community about conserving energy and lowering consumption from August to October.

At the junior high school early last month, the game doubled as an opportunity for KPBS to film one of its selected Local Heroes, Mike Cruz, who is also a member of the Hispanic engineers organization. More than 20 Granger students, school faculty, members of SHPE, and Southwestern College student mentors participated.

Looking for a dependable, sharp, and hard-working student to work about 20 hours per week as a Scientific Aid for California Water Resources Control Board Surface Water Ambient Monitoring Program. He/she should be an upper-level undergraduate or graduate student majoring in biology, geology, or engineering. The position pays $11.58 to $13.34 per hour, but everyone starts at $11.58. He/she will get credit towards State service but the position does not pay for health insurance.
