MESA Research Academy, funded by the California Space Grant Consortium

Twenty MESA students (10 from City College and Southwestern College, each) attended a 1-week Research Academy at San Diego State University (SDSU) in July 2012. The Academy was designed as a “trainer the trainer academy for understanding ‘what is research?'” The Academy was designed and implemented by 3 SDSU graduate research students. San Diego MESA Alliance receives SDG&E Green Future grant

San Diego MESA Alliance receives SDG&E Green Future grant

San Diego, CA – The San Diego Mathematics Engineering Science Achievement (MESA) Alliance has been awarded a $30,000 San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) Green Future grant.

The objective of the grant is three-fold: 1) Enhance/develop energy efficiency and sustainable building job skills training that meets current industry demand; 2) Improve outreach of and promote participation in training programs, especially for the hard-to-reach worker, and 3) Provide “green” career exploration opportunities to post-secondary education students.

With respect to the third objective, A Green Future is interested in reaching post-secondary education students. The goal is to create student awareness of worthwhile careers in energy efficiency and sustainability, and from there provide opportunities to explore those fields more directly and in greater
depth. There is also a desire to help students understand what education, training or experience is typically required in the sustainability career of their interest.

Raytheon Sponsors 2012-2013 San Diego Region Joint Planning Conference for Engineering and Science Chapters

Raytheon Company, along with the San Diego Mathematics, Engineering, and Science Achievement (MESA) Alliance staff, hosted a unique event that brought student leaders and professionals together to network, collaborate and exchange ideas for improving math and science education. Their goal is to increase the number of students to pursue academic and career paths in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) industries, increase retention in these disciplines and promote opportunities in post graduate studies.

This is a great way to encourage and mentor students to enter STEM fields, and fulfill the MEP/MSP community service requirement. Sign up for the 2012 Walk on Water Competition

The 2012 Walk on Water competition will be held on Saturday, October 20, 2012 at the Southwestern Community College swimming pool, from 10:00 – 1:00 PM. Registration will begin at 9:00 am. Free parking will be available in Lots K and L.

The competition is expected to yield over 80 attendees and over 10 teams from Southwestern College, San Diego State University, San Diego City College, San Diego Mesa College, and various high schools within the San Diego MESA Schools Program (San Pasqual High School, Mark Twain High School, Crawford High School), and La Jolla High School.

Some of the campuses respective MESA programs’ will refund costs to build the buoyancy shoes that teams create to ‘walk on water’, up to $100. Southwestern College student organizations such as AMSA (American Medical Student Association) and SHPE (Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers) are expected to have refreshments available for attendees to purchase as part of their fundraising efforts.

MESA Conference for Leaders and Pros

The San Diego MESA Alliance and Raytheon Company will host a unique event to bring student leaders and professionals together to network, collaborate and exchange ideas for improving math and science education.
