MESA/Pratt & Whitney Training Academy

The purpose of the training academy was to expose a diverse group of college level students in the Mathematics, Engineering, and Science Achievement (MESA) programs at San Diego State University, San Diego City College, and Southwestern College to Pratt & Whitney, its’ business development, and the concept of ACE/Lean Six Sigma.

A total of 19 MESA students attended the Training Academy: 10 students from San Diego State University, 4 students from San Diego City College, and 5 students from Southwestern College.

MESA/Pratt & Whitney Training Academy Application

This MESA Training Academy will focus on the business/managerial concept of Lean Six Sigma that can apply to any business/company and any discipline.

Eligibility:
1) You must be a MESA/MEP/MSP student at either San Diego City College, Southwestern College, or San Diego State University.
2) You must be a U.S. citizen or Permanent Resident and bring proof of status to the Training Academy.
3) You must be free from 9:00 – 2:00 pm on Friday, March 22, 2013 (plus ~1 hour before and after to account for travel time).

MESA/Hamilton Sundstrand Training Academy

The Hamilton Sundstrand Training Academy took place at Hamilton Sundstrand Power Systems in San Diego, California, on Friday, April 13, 2012, from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

The purpose of the training academy was to expose a diverse group of college level engineering students to Hamilton Sundstrand, business development, and the skills needed to succeed in the workplace as an Auxiliary Power Unit (APU) Market Analyst.

Business Development Manager David J. Gideon facilitated discussions regarding Hamilton Sundstrand, business development, and their APU Market Analysis internship. Mr. Bob Edie and Ms. Maria Charles provided an extensive facility tour that included: safety, product line, packing, shipping, turbine assembly, rotor assembly, APU test cells, and the tail end of certain aircrafts.

Students also received classroom training on the APS5000 APU, an APU found on the Boeing 787 aircraft. Topics of instruction and discussion included: APU theory, line maintenance, fault isolation, technical specifications, the global economy, and export control. Older turbines, wheels, inlet guide drains, and rotor assembly parts were available on hand for closer inspection.

MESA/Caltrans Training Academy

Caltrans, via their headquarters and traffic management center shared with CHP, provided ‘in-house’ training; students learned technical skill sets and gained professional development to enhance their professional development and further their employment opportunities.

MESA/SPAWAR Training Academy

The 3rd Annual Team SPAWAR MESA Training Academy took place at the SPAWAR Old Town facility in San Diego, California, on Friday, March 19, 2010, from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

The purpose of the training academy was to expose a diverse group of college level engineering, math, and science students to the world of Civil Service employment and the skills needed to succeed in the workplace as an acquisition professional or engineer.

SPAWAR facilitated discussions and training regarding Employment Programs and Benefits, The New Professional Program, Life as a New Professional, and Director of Organizational Development and Training Management, Dr. Douglas Fenner, presented Leadership/Workforce Development: A Global Literacy Perspective. Dr. Fenner also recommended several readings to increase students’ self-leadership skills.

MESA/Caltrans Training Academy

Caltrans hosted the MESA Training Academy on March 27, 2009 from 9:00 – 4:00 pm.

Chris Thomas provided an introduction to transportation engineering at their district office in Old Town, fielding questions from students as well as discussing topics such as, ‘what is transportation engineering’, ‘what skills are needed’, ‘how does a project get built’, ‘what needs to be considered when designing a project’, amongst other topics.

Dimitar Peev led a hands on design exercise that allowed students to design a six lane freeway using CADD. Students were provided and lunch and continued the training academy at the transportation management center site where Everett Townsend gave students a tour of the TMC and facilitated a hands on activity that demonstrated real time monitoring and traffic operations strategies, such as incident management, ramp metering and reversible/managed lanes.
