When Brenda Lopez competed in the Mathematics Engineering Science Achievement Day regionalcompetition last year, she was a little upset with the turnout of her bridge.“It was my first year in MESA and I didn’t really understand all the rules,” said Brenda, a 14-year-old eighth-grader at Kennedy Middle School.

Going into this year’s competition, Brenda said she felt more confident in her ability to build a strongbridge due to the MESA Day Academy held at her school here Saturday.

Nearly 40 MESA students from various junior high and high schools attended the academy, which featured presentations on how to build a strong bridge, glider and prosthetic arm.
