2013 Walk on Water Competition

The Walk on Water Competition is held every year to promote the field of Engineering and its importance in society. More specifically, the goal of the event is to promote fundamental scientific and engineering design principles that are the core foundation of all engineers. Students are assigned the task of designing, constructing, and piloting water shoes across the pool. They must consider three important design considerations; buoyancy, stability, and propulsion. The entire process will allow one to gain experience at applying the engineering design process and ultimately, to solve open-ended engineering problems.

2013-2014 MESA Schools Program Outreach, Volunteer, and Employment Opportunities

The MESA Schools Program is the K-12 branch of MESA. In San Diego, there are two K-12 programs serving schools in San Diego County and Imperial County. We work with underrepresented and educationally disadvantaged students over a large network of over 40 middle and high schools.
We want to work with the local university chapters of STEM student organizations to reach out and make an impact in our SD community. Get in touch with us to meet your outreach goals and to volunteer at our events.

Host STEM Students on Shadow Day!

Through the San Diego MESA Alliance, college students will have a unique experience to witness the “real world” of work in an engineering or scientific environment. Your involvement will provide a great opportunity for our up and coming students to “test the waters” in a field of their interest and see first-hand how classroom skills relate to the workplace. What better way to do that, than observe and work with a professional in action! You the employer, can make a positive impact on the lives of students; future engineers and scientists!

INTERESTED COMPANIES AND STUDENTS CAN REGISTER HERE: http://mep.sdsu.edu/Shadowday.htm. Check out the timeline for other dates.

If you have any questions about Shadow Day, please contact Natasha Celise (ncelise@mail.sdsu.edu) or 619-594-7704.

2012 NSF/MESA Summer Team Internship Symposium

The National Science Foundation (NSF) grant to the San Diego MESA Alliance (SDMA) provided stipends for 36 student interns (12 students in MESA/MEP program at each campus – San Diego City College, San Diego State University, and Southwestern Community College) this summer at various projects in science and engineering firms.
This is a unique paid internship that incorporates a team component into the student internship experience. Hired student interns were placed in teams of 2-4 students to work on projects in engineering and science firms or for faculty. Summer internships occurred between May through August of 2012, at a minimum of 100 hours. In some cases, employers and/or faculty may extend internships or create other internship opportunities for students (beyond summer 2012).
