MESA/Pratt & Whitney Training Academy

The purpose of the training academy was to expose a diverse group of college level students in the Mathematics, Engineering, and Science Achievement (MESA) programs at San Diego State University, San Diego City College, and Southwestern College to Pratt & Whitney, its’ business development, and the concept of ACE/Lean Six Sigma.

A total of 19 MESA students attended the Training Academy: 10 students from San Diego State University, 4 students from San Diego City College, and 5 students from Southwestern College.

12th Annual Leadership Summit

The 12th Annual Leadership Summit took place at the Indian Hills Camp in Jamul on the weekend of March 1 – March 3, 2013.

40 MESA/MESA Engineering Program (MEP)/Maximizing Science Potential (MSP) students from San Diego City College, San Diego State University, Southwestern College, Morse High and San Pasqual High Schools participated in various competitions that promoted the use of their leadership skills and various strengths attributes.

Imperial Valley’s MESA center to host regional event on April 20

College Shadow Day

On March 19, 2013, 8 high school Mathematics, Engineering, Science, Achievement (MESA) students from North County Trade Tech High School were matched with their university counterparts in the San Diego State University (SDSU) MESA Engineering & Maximizing Science Potential program, based on major and interests.

The SDSU students allowed the high schoolers to ‘shadow’ them throughout the day, which meant bringing them along to classes, visiting labs, touring the beautiful SDSU campus, and sharing their college experience (both good and bad). For some high school students, this was their first college experience or their first time on a college campus.

Olympics & Robotics Competition Signup

Our San Diego MESA Alliance (SDMA) that includes the MESA programs at San Diego City College, Southwestern College, and MESA Schools Programs in San Diego and Imperial Valley are beginning to take student sign-ups for:

20th Annual MESA Olympics & Robotics Competition

Competition for all MESA programs segments in problem-solving sessions and/or robotics competition designed to promote teamwork, engineering and problem solving skill development.

The OLYMPICS competition has teams of 4 students solve technical problems in mathematics, chemistry, physics and engineering. The competition is broken down in 3 academic levels.

The ROBOTICS competition uses the LEGO Mind storm NXT 2.0 robotics kits for teams of up to 4 MESA students to build robots to complete 2 challenges-an obstacle course, and a head-to-head competition. The nature of the obstacle course and battle will be distributed with the Robotics kits after teams are formulated and also found below.

Students’ intellect on display at MESA Day

IMPERIAL — Aside from the wealth of information they found on the Internet about prosthetic arms, Holtville Middle School eighth-grader Eli Romo also had access to one. Because of the help this physical aid provided, Eli and his fellow team members were able to design one they felt made them MESA Day contenders.

MESA/Pratt & Whitney Training Academy Application

This MESA Training Academy will focus on the business/managerial concept of Lean Six Sigma that can apply to any business/company and any discipline.

Eligibility:
1) You must be a MESA/MEP/MSP student at either San Diego City College, Southwestern College, or San Diego State University.
2) You must be a U.S. citizen or Permanent Resident and bring proof of status to the Training Academy.
3) You must be free from 9:00 – 2:00 pm on Friday, March 22, 2013 (plus ~1 hour before and after to account for travel time).
