Student Paper Competition

The IEEE Engineering in Medicine & Biology Society sponsors a paper competition for EMBS Student Members (Graduates and Undergraduates). Students should submit their entry to the Conference as a Contributed Paper by 29th March 2012. Each student’s Faculty Advisor will be required to endorse their student’s submission by submitting a Nomination Form between 27th March and 25th May, 2012. Failure to submit the accompanying Nomination Form within the submission window will invalidate the respective student paper submission for the student paper competition.

Change a Life – Become a Literacy Tutor

Are you looking for a way to make a difference in your community and are struggling to find an opportunity that works with your schedule? Volunteer to help someone learn English as a Second Language. If you can speak English, then you can make a difference in someone’s life. The Laubach Literacy Council and San Diego County Library’s LEARN Adult Literacy Program are partnering to offer a two-day training for potential literacy tutors. The training is taking place on Saturday, June 9 and Saturday, June 16 from 9:30 a.m. – 4 p.m. at the 4S Ranch Library, 10433 Reserve Dr.

Pazzaz volunteerism

Pazzaz is a nonprofit 501c(3) that provides tutoring, homework assistance and enrichment programs, year round, to low income at-risk youth grades 1-12. With 16 years of experience we have been able to improve the future life-prospects of youth through our Total Child Model which stipulates that a child’s success is dependent on the continuous, intense interaction of highest quality innovative academic, personal and emotional development programs aimed at family support and stability.

19th Annual Olympics & Robotics Competition

The 19th Annual MESA Olympics & Robotics Competition took place on Saturday, April 28, 2012 from 8:30 – 2:00 pm at San Diego City College.

108 MESA students, staff, and volunteers across the MESA programs at San Diego State University, San Diego City College, Southwestern College, and from Roosevelt and Mann middle schools in San Diego and Southwest and Imperial high schools in Imperial Valley who are part of the MESA Schools Programs in their counties, participated in the competition.
The competition segmented in problem-solving sessions, prosthetic arm and/or robotics competition designed to promote teamwork, engineering and problem solving skill development.

The OLYMPICS competition has teams of 4 students solve technical problems in mathematics, chemistry, physics and engineering. The competition is broken down in 3 academic levels.

The ROBOTICS competition uses the LEGO Mind storm NXT 2.0 robotics kits for teams of 4 students to build robots to complete 2 challenges-an obstacle course, and a head-to-head competition.

This year, for the first time, a Prosthetic Arm competition for middle school students was included in the event. Two groups created a prosthetic arm using materials provided to them. The projects were judged on dexterity and design.

Upcoming – 19th Annual Olympics & Robotics Competition

Competition for all MESA programs segments in problem-solving sessions and/or robotics competition designed to promote teamwork, engineering and problem solving skill development.
The OLYMPICS competition has teams of 4 students solve technical problems in mathematics, chemistry, physics and engineering. The competition is broken down in 3 academic levels.
The ROBOTICS competition uses the LEGO Mind storm NXT 2.0 robotics kits for teams of 4 students to build robots to complete 2 challenges-an obstacle course, and a head-to-head competition. The exact nature of the obstacle course and battle will be distributed with the Robotics kits after teams are formulated around Spring Break.

CATAPULT INTO ENGINEERING

Join us for a fun filled day of hands-on engineering for middle school students, their parents and educators. Students will work directly with engineers while they complete hands-on activities and compete in a catapult competition.
