Active RF and mm-Wave MEMS Resonators Using Transistor Sensing

Dr. Weinstein will discuss the Resonant Body Transistor (RBT), which can be integrated into a standard CMOS process for low power clock generation and high-Q tank circuits. We recently demonstrated the first hybrid RF MEMS-CMOS resonators in Si at the transistor level of IBM’s 32nm SOI CMOS process, without the need for any post-processing or packaging. The unreleased, Si bulk acoustic resonators are driven capacitively using the thin gate dielectric, and actively sensed using a body-contacted nFET incorporated into the resonant cavity. FET sensing with the high fT, high performance transistors in CMOS amplifies the mechanical signal before the presence of parasitics. The resulting RF-MEMS resonators provide low power, low cost, small footprint building blocks for on-chip signal generation and processing.

Student applications being accepted for 2012 Summer Team Internship program

The NSF MESA Summer Team Internship program is an excellent opportunity for students to develop new skills, gain experience working in science and engineering firms, collaborate in a team, and build relationships with potential employers.

Students will be placed in teams of 2-4 students to collaborate on a research poster that details their work on projects in science and engineering firms or for faculty in, but not limited to, San Diego. Prior summer team internships and its luncheons/receptions/poster presentations can be viewed in the archives.

The internship is a minimum of 100 hours at $12.50/hour for a total of a $1,250 stipend (minus applicable taxes).

Paid research opportunities for Spring and Summer 2012

SDSU is a partner with University of Washington and MIT for the new Engineering Research Center (ERC) in Sensori Motor Neural Engineering (CSNE).

We have a few opportunities for SDSU MEP/MSP students to gain paid research experience (spring and summer 12) and to share that experience with pre-college students (outreach).

2011 Shadow Day

Through the San Diego MESA Alliance, college students will have a unique experience to witness the “real world” of work in an engineering or scientific environment. Your involvement will provide a great opportunity for our up and coming students to “test the waters” in a field of their interest and see first-hand how classroom skills relate to the workplace.

What better way to do that, than observe and work with a professional in action! You the employer, get to make a positive impact on the lives of students; future engineers and scientists!

More information can be found at http://mep.sdsu.edu/ShadowDay.htm

College Shadow Day

On February 10, 2011, 22 middle and high school students from schools within the San Diego and Imperial Valley MESA Schools Programs visited the San Diego State University (SDSU) campus.

The students were matched with their university counterparts in the SDSU MESA Engineering & Maximizing Science Potential program, based on major and interests.

The SDSU students allowed the middle and high schoolers to ‘shadow’ them throughout the day. That meant bringing them along to classes, visiting labs, touring the beautiful campus, and sharing their college experience (both good and bad). For many of these middle and high school students, this was their first college experience and their first time on a college campus.
